Vehicle on its side after accident in Beavercreek

Two people were taken to a hospital after a crash Monday afternoon at Pentagon Boulevard and Commons Boulevard left one vehicle on its side, according to police Sgt. Michael Hummel.

A vehicle failed to stop at a red light at the intersection across from The Mall at Fairfield Commons, causing a collision with another vehicle, Hummel said.

Rescue crews were dispatched at about 4:45 p.m. on a report of a possible vehicle accident involving a rollover.

The conditions of the victims were not immediately available.

Alcohol was not believed to be a factor and the accident is still under investigation, police said.

Eaton man gets four years for pharmacy break-in

An Eaton man has been ordered by a judge to pay $1,119 in restitution to Long’s Pharmacy for the drugs he was convicted of taking last September, according to the Wilmington News Journal.

The restitution is part of the four-year prison sentence for Steven C. Jones, according to the newspaper.

Jones, 31, was convicted of forcing his way into the business, formerly Zeigler Pharmacy, and stealing numerous bottles of pain medication just in the early morning hours of Sept. 14, 2011, the newspaper reported.

He was convicted on single counts of felony drug trafficking and having a weapon as a felon, two counts of felony possession of criminal tools and numerous felony counts of aggravated possession and possession of drugs.

Jones, who was sentenced Thursday, is being held at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient.

Piqua house fire turned fatal over the weekend

A house fire last week in Piqua turned fatal over the weekend with the death of a lady who lived in the house on Willard Street.

Carol Ann Scherer, 77, died over the weekend as a result of injuries she suffered in what was a bedroom fire in her home last Wednesday.

A number of people came to her aid when the fire started.

Scherer managed to escape the flames, but collapsed in front of her home.

Fire officials are now calling the cause of the fire accidental and not suspicious. Scherer was in ill health and on oxygen.

Scherer's body will be donated to the Boonshoft Medical School at Wright State University.

Boy says he was assaulted with glow stick on school bus

The parents of a 6-year-old boy who says he was assaulted on a school bus are angry that the incident was not reported to them.

Glen Armstead said his son got off Bus 26 from Dayton View Academy on Friday with a blood all over his shirt.

The boy and his sister told their parents that an older student had pushed him down and stuck a glow stick up his nose.

Armstead said the bus driver dropped off the boy without alerting any adults to the incident.

“This is the second incident with them buses,” he said.

The incident was reported to Dayton police, who went to the home and talked with the parents. No criminal charges were pursued by police.

A spokesperson for Dayton Public Schools said that bus drivers are required to write up incident reports and give them to the principal of the school involved. On Monday, no report had been turned in.

The school took action after being contacted by the parents. The boy accused in the assault has been taken off that bus, school officials said. The principal has also requested a meeting with the parents and the bus driver to discuss the incident and how it was handled.

Richmond parents charged in infant's death

A Richmond couple has been charged with felony neglect in the death of their 4-month-old son.

Amy Hockett, 21, and her fiancé Joseph Pierson, 24, were arrested Monday afternoon and are both being held in the Wayne County Jail.

Their son Khaiden died Feb. 5. He was not breathing when paramedics responded to 504 S. 12^th St. He was transported to Reid Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Preliminary findings from an autopsy performed Feb. 6 indicate that the baby died from malnutrition. An official report on his cause of death is still pending.

Hockett talked to News Center 7 last week and said she and Pierson are innocent.

"I'm being accused of hurting the only thing that gives me a reason to breathe. I love that baby,” she said. “They can accuse whoever they want because I did not hurt my son. I would never hurt my son."

At the time, the parents were listed as suspects, but no charges had been filed.

The investigation is ongoing and News Center 7 will bring you more details as they become available.

Mom of toddler found on porch pleads not guilty

The mother of a toddler who was found on a neighbor's porch pleaded not guilty on Monday in Clark County Municipal Court.

Billie Ann Eason, 27, of Todd Lee Drive in New Carlisle, was charged with child endangerment, deputies said. Her 2-year-old child was found crying and cold on a neighbor's porch at about 11 p.m. on Feb. 9.

Clark County sheriff's deputies said they found Eason asleep at her home nearby.

Eason told police the child had a history of unlocking the front door and going outside. Eason also told police her 9-year-old child awoke during the night and found the door open, closed it and went back to bed.

School takes action after student assaulted on bus

A local school is now taking action after a student was attacked.

Glen Armstead, III, 6, told News Center that an older student pushed a glow stick up his nose. News Center 7 has obtained the medical record to prove it happened.

Armstead took bus 26 home from the Dayton View Academy, and it is a trip that his mother will never forget.

Stephanie Armstead said, "He had a band-aid. He covered his nose and mouth and blood was all over his shirt."

His dad said the ambulance came and then the police.

Glen's mom said, "His sister said a little boy pushed him down and stuck it up his nose."

According to medical documents, the glow stick caused nasal injury. The parents are upset with the school bus driver and Dayton Public Schools because Glen was just dropped off at the bus stop without alerting the parents.

Glen's father said this is not the first time that Dayton schools has upset him.

"This is the second incident or second on the bus period. This is the second incident with them buses," Glen Armstead, II, said.

News Center 7 contacted Dayton Schools. They said if a bus driver knows about an incident, they are required to write up a report to give to the principal of the school.

So, News Center 7 contact the principal of Dayton View Academy who said there has been no report written up on the incident by the bus driver. However, the school went ahead and took action by taking the boy accused of assaulting Glen Armstead off the bus.

The principal has requested a meeting with the parents and the school bus driver.

News Center 7 tried to reach out to the school bus drivers union in Dayton with no success.

Mom faces more charges in Englewood crash

Samantha Dunlap, 21, of the 100 block of South Old Mill in Union, appeared Monday in Vandalia Municipal Court.

She was charged child endangerment, a fifth-degree felony. An aggravated vehicular assault charge may also be added as her 2-year-old daughter was injured in a Feb. 10 crash in the 500 block of South Main Street, according to police.

An OVI charge may also be added, police said.

Dunlap had her child taken away from her by children's services in 2010 after she left the infant alone in her apartment, police said.

Dunlap is being held in the Montgomery County Jail and her bond is set at $25,000. Her next court date, a preliminary hearing, is scheduled for Feb. 17 at 4 p.m. before Judge Cynthia Heck.

Dunlap's case has been referred to the public defender's office.

Suspects sought in Eaton store robbery

Two men displayed a handgun while attempting to rob Village Pantry in Eaton over the weekend.

The robbers wore all dark clothing and masks and gloves, police said. They displayed what appeared to be a handgun. Two employees were in the store but were not harmed.

The robbery happened at approximately 5:55 a.m. Saturday.

The robbers took $100 and eight cartons of cigarettes. They fled on foot and may have had a vehicle waiting on them, police said.

Police investigating Dollar General robbery

Police are investigating the robbery of the Dollar General store, which is located on East Linden Avenue in Miamisburg.

The robbery occurred around 2:05 p.m Monday. The suspect did not display a weapon but kept his hand in his pocket, according to Montgomery County Emergency Dispatch Center.

The robber then fled the scene in the direction of River Road, police said.

Brookville man accused of embezzling from Cracker Barrel

A former Cracker Barrel manager is accused of embezzling more than $2,000 from the restaurant in Middletown.

Douglas Criffield, 46, of Brookville was arrested on Friday afternoon on suspicion of theft for stealing $2,074 from the country-themed restaurant at 3280 Towne Blvd. over the past few years, according to police.

The theft had been investigated by Cracker Barrel's regional loss prevention department, and according to a Middletown police report, Criffield allegedly had been "voiding receipts and taking small amounts of money over the period of several years."

Criffield pleaded not guilty Monday during an arraignment in Middletown Municipal Court. His case was also bound over to the Butler County grand jury.

Criffield is out of jail on his own recognizance, according to court officials.

2 people wanted after attempted burglary

Authorities are searching for two people who attempted to break into a Springfield residence.

Around 12:30 p.m. today, the two suspects were spotted in a stolen vehicle after attempting to break into a house on Carillion Drive, according to reports.

The car was abandoned, and a K9 tracked the suspects to the Wittenberg University campus. Police were checking a house they thought the suspects may have gone in, but no one had been caught as of 2 p.m.

The vehicle was towed.

3 escape house fire in Dayton

Three people escaped a house fire Monday afternoon at 925 Rosedale Drive that fire officials estimated caused an estimated $10,000 in damage.

When firefighters arrived on scene at about 1:15 p.m., they found two people at the bottom of the stairs headed out the door. A third person, who was an elderly woman upstairs, managed to escape the flames with the help of citizens before fire crews arrived, said fire officials.

The elderly woman suffered smoke inhalation and was shaken up, Dayton fire District Chief Barry Baldwin said.

The fire remains under investigation, but fire officials said they have an idea of what caused it.

The fire broke out in a second-floor bedroom, fire officials said.

3 students sustain minor injuries in bus crash

Three students complained of neck and back pain about 30 minutes after the bus they were on was rear-ended by a sport utility vehicle.

Around 9 a.m. Monday, an SUV rear-ended the bus, which was stopped at a railroad crossing at the intersection of Broadway Street and Mercer Avenue. The bus suffered minor damage, according to fire captain Paul Raisch.

None of the students complained of injuries at the scene, and another bus arrived and took them to school, according to reports. Once at school, three students complained of neck or back pain, authorities said.

Authorities notified the parents of the students.

GOP candidate Santorum adds 2 southern Ohio stops

Republican officials in southern Ohio say GOP presidential contender Rick Santorum will be at two county party dinners this Friday.

Warren County Republicans say the former U.S. senator from Pennsylvania will stop by their Lincoln-Reagan dinner in the northern Cincinnati suburb of Mason. Santorum has a private reception there. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is the dinner's keynote speaker.

Republicans in Brown County say Santorum will headline their Lincoln Day dinner Friday night, about 40 miles east of Cincinnati.

Santorum also is scheduled to speak Saturday at an Ohio Christian Alliance luncheon in Columbus and later to Summit County Republicans in Akron.

Former House speaker Newt Gingrich campaigned through Ohio last week, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney has upcoming events in Cuyahoga County and Cincinnati.

Ohio's primary is March 6.

Man, woman accused of making meth at hotel

Officers arrested a man and a woman just after 1 a.m. Monday after serving a search warrant at a hotel in Butler Twp.

Police said they found illegal controlled substances, drug paraphernalia and chemicals used in making meth from room 145 at Red Roof Inn, 7370 Miller Lane.

The names of those arrested have not been released, by officials said they are a 42-year-old man and a 43-year-old woman.

The case will be presented to Montgomery County prosecutors for felony charges.

Man accused of dragging woman through parking lot

A man was arrested Sunday after he allegedly grabbed a woman's purse and dragged her through a Kroger parking lot, police said.

Just before 3 p.m., the woman reported she was walking back to her car in the parking lot of Kroger, at 1822 South Limestone St., when the suspect came up behind her and grabbed her purse, dragged her across the parking lot and hit her head on a parked car.

The woman screamed for help, according to witnesses, before the purse strap broke. The man, identified as Robert Goddard, of London, fled behind the store, and as he was attempting to walk back to the front, several people detained him until officers arrived, according to reports.

Goddard was arrested for robbery. The victim declined treatment at the scene.

Woman killed when tractor, truck collide

A 31-year-old woman from Cable, Ohio, was killed Monday when a tractor and a pickup truck collided on Stringtown Road near Mechanicsburg, the Ohio Highway Patrol said.

Kwen Buchanan was killed instantly in the wreck that was reported at about 8:50 a.m. when emergency crews were dispatched to 7900 Stringtown Road.

According to troopers at the scene, Buchanan was driving east on Stringtown hit the oncoming farm equipment after drifting left of center.

Cable is northeast of Springfield.

Troy man crashes into ditch near local school

Miami County deputies said a young Troy man faces a number of charges following a single-vehicle crash early Sunday morning near Miami East High School.

According to a crash report, Lucas Hershberger, 20, Troy, lost control of his pick-up truck on Troy-Urbana Road, east of State Route 589 and ended up in a cluster of trees down an embankment trapped in the wreckage.

Hershberger was not seriously injured. However, deputies said that he was intoxicated.

Woman accused of assaulting officers, jailer

A woman from Piqua was arrested over the weekend on two counts of assaulting a police officer. She was also charged with one count of felonious assault on a corrections officer.

Betsey Bixler, 26, is being held in the Miami County Jail.

According to deputies, Bixler was outside a bar in Piqua and got into an argument with another person. Officers arrived and that is when she is accused of assulting two police officers. Deputies later said she caused a disturbance in her cell and when two corrections officers arrived, she is accused of assaulting one of them.

The investigation continues.

Wanted fugitive now under arrest

Clark County Sheriff's Deputies arrested a wanted man Sunday.

Todd Alan White, 34, has been charged with failure to register as a sex offender and has three child support warrants.

Police said White is $57,000 in default on child support.

He was arrested Sunday at an apartment at 1017 Robinson Drive.

A person in the apartment initially refused to let deputies inside. But the occupant later relented. White was hiding upstairs and was arrested without further incident, according to the Sheriff's Office.

White is now in the Clark County Jail.

Snow overnight could cause slick morning drive

Snow is expected to arrive in the Miami Valley before midnight tonight and could add up to more than an inch by morning.

Light snow is likely to begin falling as early as 9 or 10 p.m., said Storm Center 7 Chief Meteorologist Jamie Simpson, with the heaviest accumulation occurring overnight.

Simpson said he expects about an inch of snow on the ground by sunrise with another half inch possible through early morning Tuesday. Roads may be snow covered and slick during the morning drive.

"The steady stuff will be ending after the morning commute," he said. Temperatures will climb to a high of about 35 during the day bringing a possibility of some light rain showers.

Simpson said salt still on the roads from the weekend should help with melting. "By tomorrow evening a lot of places will have a grand total less than what they had at 9 a.m.," he said.

Sunshine will return Wednesday with highs in the 40s. Thursday it will be rainy with highs in the 40s.

Threat leads to beefed-up security at Bellbrook HS

The superintendent of the Bellbrook-Sugarcreek School District is describing this morning as "quiet," like any other Monday.

Bellbrook High School students are seeing an increased police presence today after someone scrawled a threat on a boys bathroom wall last week.

Officers will not say exactly what the threat said. But the written message indicated that something would happen at 1 p.m. The message was written in "tiny" print in pencil, according to reports.

"Kids and staff are going about their days," said Superintendent Keith St. Pierre. The threat was believed to have been written near the end of the school day Friday.

St. Pierre said attendance was slightly down on Monday.

The district's top official said police are planning to talk to students who appear on surveillance footage near the bathroom on Friday afternoon.

Cameras are in every hallway of Bellbrook High School, St. Pierre said, and they cover every aspect of the hallways and the perimeter of the building. Parents have been notified.

St. Pierre said the district plans to have extra officers in the buildings all week.

High schoolers focus on human trafficking

Seniors at Chaminade-Julienne High School heard Sunday from a survivor of sexual exploitation. The students want to raise awareness of human trafficking.

Theresa Flores said there is a huge demand for sex. It is big business, and people are willing to pay a lot for it.

Others want to make money from it. She said the average pimp makes over 300 thousand dollars a year.

Flores said 100 thousand American kids are being trafficked right now in the United States.
