Bruins Battle Wolverines In The Big Apple

Thursday, November 20, 2008

(Sports Network) - The fourth-ranked UCLA Bruins are set to take on the Michigan Wolverines in semifinal action of the 2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Classic from Madison Square Garden this evening. The winner of this game will take on either Duke or Southern Illinois for the tournament title on Friday.

Ben Howland's Bruins were the host team for one of the Regionals in this event and as expected, advanced to New York City with wins over both Prairie View (82-58) and Miami-Ohio (64-59). UCLA has been a picture of consistency over the last few years, winning 30 or more games in each of the last three seasons and with a loaded lineup again, the team will try to make it four years in a row.

The Wolverines struggled last year in John Beilein's first season, but early indications are that Michigan will be much improved this year. The Wolverines also benefited from being the host team in the first two rounds of this tournament and took care of their business, routing both Michigan Tech (77-55) and Northeastern (76-56) last week in Ann Arbor.

This is the 15th all-time meeting between these two teams, with UCLA winning 11 of the previous 14 matchups. In addition, the Bruins have captured each of the last four games in the series, including a tough 69-54 decision last year.

The Wolverines have a superstar in sophomore guard Manny Harris. As a freshman, the 6-5 Harris averaged over 17 points per game and it doesn't look like he is suffering a sophomore slump thus far. Harris has hit on 16-of-24 shots from the floor in the first two games (.667), including 4-of-7 from behind the arc, en route to a whopping 28.0 ppg. Harris is also making his presence felt on the boards (8.5 rpg) and in distributing the ball (5.0 apg). DeShawn Sims provides the perfect balance to Harris' perimeter game, with tough interior play. The 6-8 junior has come off the bench in the first two games, but has been a force down low with 14.5 points and 9.5 rebounds per outing. In the win over Northeastern which propelled the Wolverines to New York City, Harris was unstoppable, putting up a near triple-double, with 26 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Sims poured in 19 points and grabbed seven boards in the win. The Wolverines also showed their claws defensively, holding the Huskies to a mere .293 shooting effort, and 4-of-24 from behind the arc (.167).

The Bruins made light work of Prairie View in the season-opener, but things got much harder in the second round, a five-point win over Miami-Ohio. UCLA shot .516 from the floor against the Panthers, but that number dipped to .451 against the RedHawks. All-American Darren Collison and Josh Shipp tied for top scoring honors for the team against Miami-Ohio, each putting up 16 points. However, the team failed to get much support, especially from the rest of the starting five, which combined for a mere 14 points. Michael Roll was the top performer off the bench, chipping in with nine points in 22 minutes of work. Collison is a player that can put his team on his back and carry it to victory. In the early stages of the season, he is shooting a healthy .600 from the floor (12-of-20) and averaging 17.5 ppg. Shipp has not had as much success finding his range (10-of-25, .400), but is still adding 12.5 ppg. Howland expects a lot from freshman guard Jrue Holiday (8.0 ppg), but has eased him into action, with the 6-3 youngster playing just 19.0 minutes per game thus far.

Adrien posted 17 points, while Thabeet logged 13 points and 13 rebounds for UConn (13-1, 2-1 Big East), which has bounced back with back-to-back conference victories after its lone loss to Georgetown last week.
