Wright Leads The Way As No. 22 Georgetown Slips Past Jacksonville

Tuesday, November 18, 2008

(Sports Network) - Chris Wright scored 16 points, hauled in five rebounds and doled out four assists to lead 22nd-ranked Georgetown in a 71-62 victory over Jacksonville at the Verizon Center.

Greg Monroe, in his college debut, added 14 points and seven boards for the Hoyas (1-0), who will host Drexel on Saturday. DaJuan Summers and Jessie Sapp scored 13 points apiece for two-time defending Big East regular- season champion Georgetown, which is coming off a 28-win season. However, the Hoyas enter the new year with a chip on their shoulder after being shocked by Davidson in the second round of the NCAA Tournament last March.

Ben Smith tallied 17 points for the Dolphins (0-2), who were coming off a 59-57 loss to Florida State in their season-opener. Marcus Allen gave 14 points and nine boards for Jacksonville, which will play American University on Saturday.

Monroe's jumper not even four minutes into the game gave the Hoyas an 8-0 lead.

The Dolphins, though, answered with a 10-4 run that pulled the visitors within 12-10 midway through the first half. Szymon Lukasiak went 2-for-2 from the charity stripe to spark the run and Ayron Hardy closed it out with a 1-for-2 showing from the line.

Wright made one free throw to give Georgetown a three-point lead, but Hardy sunk a layup to cut it to 13-12 with about nine minutes left in the half.

The Hoyas refused to be upset and followed with nine straight points. Monroe got things going with a dunk and Sapp's layup closed it out for a 22-12 G'Town advantage.

The teams traded baskets and the Hoyas led 37-25 at the break.

Georgetown's lead hovered around 12 for the better part of the second half, but two free throws from Smith set the tone for a 9-2 Dolphins run. Allen's layup closed out the run with 5:48 left in the game and pulled Jacksonville within 54-49.

Moments later, two free throws from Smith made it a four-point game, 59-55.

Summers responded with three free throws to make it a seven-point game with 2:54 left in the game.

Jacksonville never got within five the rest of the way.

Game Notes
