Pac-10 Conference News And Notes

Monday, October 6, 2008

(Sports Network) - ARIZONA: The Wildcats jumped out to a 17-0 lead this past weekend against Washington and never looked back, as Arizona dismantled the Huskies, 48-14. The Wildcats roared offensively, collecting 449 total yards, including 256 rushing yards on 5.0 ypc. Nic Grigsby led the way on the ground with 113 yards and one score, while Matt Scott added 58 yards on just six carries. Willie Tuitama also had a strong performance for the Wildcats, as the quarterback completed 17-of-21 passes for 193 yards and three touchdowns. All three scores went to Rob Gronkowski, who tied a school record for touchdown receptions in a single game. The tight end also led the squad with five catches and 109 receiving yards. At 4-1, the Wildcats will now hit the road to face the Stanford Cardinal in hopes of pushing their league mark to 3-0.

ARIZONA STATE: The Sun Devils surrendered 17 straight points to begin the game this past weekend and never got back on track, as Arizona State suffered its third straight loss, falling to California by a 24-14 margin. ASU was its own worst enemy, as the team committed three turnovers, and converted only 4-of-16 third down chances. The rushing attack was practically nonexistent, as the Sun Devils rumbled for 71 yards on 2.2 ypc. Keegan Herring scored in the loss, but the tailback rushed for just 37 yards, while Dimitri Nance led the way with 39 yards on 11 carries. Unfortunately, Rudy Carpenter was not much better under center, as the quarterback threw for only 165 yards and one touchdown. Carpenter was also intercepted twice and sacked on three different occasions. It gets even harder for the Wildcats, as the team will now have to head to the Coliseum to take on the USC Trojans.

CALIFORNIA: Nate Longshore was back as the Golden Bears' starter this weekend, and the signal caller did not disappoint, leading Cal to a 24-14 victory. Longshore, who sat the bench the past couple of weeks in favor of Kevin Riley, was back as the team's main man and threw for 198 yards and three touchdowns. Shane Vereen, who was running in place of Jahvid Best, worked extremely hard in the win, rushing for 93 yards on 27 carries. The tailback also led the Golden Bears with five receptions and 51 yards. Cal will enjoy some much needed rest this weekend, and the team will return to the field on October 18th when the Wildcats head to Tucson to battle the Arizona Wildcats.

OREGON: The Ducks fell out of the Top 25 this past weekend, as the team was embarrassed by USC, 44-10. It was the second loss in the last three games for Oregon, which is now 2-1 in Pac-10 action. The Ducks were shut down offensively, as the team finished with just 239 total yards, including just 60 rushing yards on a pathetic 1.5 ypc. The passing attack was not much better, as Jeremiah Masoli completed just 18-of-29 passes for 156 yards. Masoli also tossed an interception in the setback and was sacked twice. The defense for Oregon was even worse, as the Ducks were abused for 598 yards total yards. USC torched the defensive backfield for Oregon, throwing for a whopping 443 yards. Four of the five offensive TDs for the Trojans came via the pass, and out of the team's 28 first downs, 18 came through the air. The Ducks will try to regain their confidence this weekend when they host UCLA in a huge Pac-10 showdown.

OREGON STATE: After grabbing an improbable win against USC two weeks ago, the Beavers were unable to ride their momentum this past Thursday against Utah, as OSU fell to the Utes, 31-28. After fighting back from an 11-point deficit, the Beavers allowed Utah to score 10 points in the final 89 seconds en route to the heartbreaking loss. Although Oregon State was on the losing end this time, the offense still put forth a strong performance, especially quarterback Lyle Moevao, who completed 21-of-31 passes for 313 yards and two touchdowns. James Rodgers led the way with five receptions and 82 yards, while Jacquizz Rodgers caught four passes for 76 yards in the loss. The younger Rodgers also did a solid job on the ground, rushing for 101 yards and one score on 25 carries. The Beavers will try to return to the win column this weekend when they host the Washington State Huskies.

UCLA: The Bruins snapped a three-game losing skid with a convincing, 28-3 victory over Washington State this past weekend. UCLA only tallied 325 total yards, but more importantly the squad did not commit a single turnover and was a perfect 4-for-4 inside the red zone. Kevin Craft had a solid performance for the Bruins, as the quarterback threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns. Terrence Austin led the team with seven receptions and 77 yards, but it was Ryan Moya who did most of the damage, grabbing both touchdown tosses from Craft, while finishing with six catches and 57 yards. Unfortunately the ground game continued to struggle, as UCLA rumbled for just 100 yards on 2.7 ypc. Derrick Coleman rushed for 49 yards on just six carries, but Kahlil Bell did the hard work, carrying the ball 21 times for only 43 yards, but the running back was able to find the end zone twice. UCLA will try to keep the good times rolling when the Bruins battle the Oregon Ducks this Saturday in Eugene.

USC: After falling to Oregon State two weeks ago, the Trojans came out this past weekend to prove a point to the nation, and did just that in a 44-10 rout of the Oregon Ducks. USC used a strong passing attack, racking up 443 yards through the air. Mark Sanchez was outstanding in the win, throwing for 332 yards and three touchdowns on 19-of-28 passing. Four different players caught touchdown passes, while Patrick Turner finished with five receptions, 77 yards and one score. Joe McKnight only rushed for 27 yards in the win, but the tailback played a big role in the passing game, grabbing five passes for a team-high 86 yards. C.J. Gable led the way for USC with 49 rushing yards, while Stafon Johnson added 43 yards and one touchdown on just seven carries. The Trojans will now have a very important matchup this weekend, as USC will host the Arizona State Sun Devils in a pivotal Pac-10 clash.

WASHINGTON: The Huskies' miserable season continued this past weekend, as Washington fell to 0-5 with a 48-14 setback to Arizona. Washington surrendered 31 points in the first half and could not recover, as the defense was to blame for another loss. The Huskies were torched for 449 total yards and that includes a whopping 256 yards rushing on 5.0 ypc. Offensively the team was not much better, as the Huskies could only muster 244 total yards in the setback. Washington's ground game continued to struggle, as the squad rumbled for just 63 yards on 2.2 ypc. Ronnie Fouch, who is starting for the injured Jake Locker, had plenty of problems in the loss, as the quarterback completed just 12-of-28 passes for 181 yards and one score. Fouch was also intercepted once and sacked once. Washington will get a much needed break this weekend, but will return to the field on October 18th when the Huskies host the Oregon State Beavers.

WASHINGTON STATE: The Cougars' losing ways continued this past weekend, as Washington State was pounded by UCLA, 28-3. The offense came up small once again, as the Cougars racked up just 177 total yards, including just 26 yards on a pathetic 1.0 ypc. Washington State collected just 11 first downs in the loss, and that low number is largely due to the team's inability to convert third downs (2-for-14). Marshall Lobbestael was atrocious under center, as the signal caller completed just 15-of-31 passes for just 151 yards. Lobbestael was also intercepted once and sacked three times. The Cougars will now have to head to Corvallis to take on a very tough Oregon State squad.
