Philadelphia, PA -- (Sports Network) - BOSTON COLLEGE: Quarterback Chris Crane took matters into his own hands and scored a 13-yard touchdown with just over 22 seconds remaining, leading the Eagles to a 38-31 victory at NC State. Crane, who had been relieved of his duties in the last couple of games, had his best game of his brief career, scoring three times on the ground, in addition to completing 34-of-51 passes, for 428 yards and two more scores. Boston College moved to 4-1 on the year and 2-0 against its former coach Tom O'Brien, now with the Wolfpack. O'Brien left Chestnut Hill in 2006 as the winningest coach in school history (75 victories). BC will get a much needed bye this week, and will get back to conference business on October 18th when the Eagles welcome Virginia Tech to the New England area.CLEMSON: The Tigers were idle last weekend as they prepare for a Thursday night clash with the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. The Tiger dropped their first conference decision two weeks ago at home against Maryland (20-17). Clemson owns 56 victories over Wake Forest all-time, the second highest total against any opponent (63 wins over South Carolina is first all-time). Clemson leads the all-time series, 56-16-1. DUKE: The surprising Blue Devils were handled easily by Georgia Tech in Atlanta this past weekend, getting shutout by the Yellow Jackets, 27-0. Duke, which was 3-1 coming into the game, was stifled by Tech's stout defense, earning just 35 yards rushing and an additional 97 yards passing. It marked the 17th straight ACC road loss for the Blue Devils. QB Thaddeus Lewis obviously struggled, completing 15-of-28 passes, for 97 yards with one interception. Linebacker Michael Tauiliili reached double digits in tackles for the third straight game (11). Tauiliili entered the game as the ACC leader with 11.5 tackles per game. He now has 57 tackles in five games on the season. The Blue Devils will take advantage of a bye this weekend and will get back to work on October 18th, when they welcome the Miami Hurricanes to Durham. FLORIDA STATE: Tailback Antone Smith ran for 91 yards and scored a career-high four touchdowns, leading Florida State to a 41-39 victory over rival Miami- Florida. Quarterback Christian Ponder completed just 14 of hi 31 pass attempts for 159 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, but the young signal- caller gained 144 yards on 19 carries in the win. The Seminoles have now won two straight games following a 12-3 loss to Wake Forest. The Seminoles will enjoy a bye this week and won't return to the field until October 16th at NC State. GEORGIA TECH: Freshman quarterback Jaybo Shaw made his first start in place of injured Josh Nesbitt and made the most of it, completing 9-of-14 passes, for 230 yards and one TD, as the Yellow Jackets shutout Duke last weekend in Atlanta, 27-0. All nine completions went to wideout Demaryius Thomas, who had a huge day, including an 88-yard TD reception, the third-longest in school history. The 230 receiving yards are second all-time for Tech (Dez White had 243 yards against Virginia in 1998). Tailback Jonathan Dwyer provided plenty of balance with his 159 yards rushing, on nearly seven yards per carry. The defense did the rest, with Tech limiting the Blue Devils to a mere 132 total yards of offense, including a mere 35 yards on 1.8 yards per carry. The Yellow Jackets will step out of the ranks of the FBS this week, as they welcome Gardner-Webb to Atlanta. MARYLAND: After a strong start to the season, the Terrapins took a huge step back this week, as they were shutout by the Virginia Cavaliers this past weekend, 31-0. Quarterback Chris Turner completed 20-of-34 passes, for 223 yards, but the Terps's solid rushing attack vanished, mustering just 79 yards in the loss. The loss drops Maryland to 1-1 in league play and 4-2 overall. Linebacker Alex Wujciak had another strong outing on the defensive side of the football, tallying a game-high nine stops. After a career-high 16 tackles in the upset win over Clemson two weeks ago, Wujciak ranked fourth in the ACC in stops at 8.6 tackles per game. Maryland gets this week off, but will get back to work on October 18th when the Terps welcome Wake Forest to College Park. MIAMI-FLORIDA: It was a classic shootout this past week, but Miami came out on the losing end of a 41-39 decision against rival Florida State. The Hurricanes were in the game, despite managing just 256 yards of total offense. The ground game was really stifled, churning out just 51 yards on 3.6 yards per carry. The passing game was hindered by quarterback Robert Marve, who completed a mere 17-of-40 passes, for just 122 yards, with two interceptions. The Hurricanes will attempt to get back on track this week, as they take a break from ACC action and take on UCF in a Sunshine State showdown. NORTH CAROLINA: Butch Davis' Tar Heels continued their strong play this past week, upsetting top-25 foe Connecticut, 38-12. It was UNC's first win over a top-25 since 2005 and its first over a non-conference ranked opponent since 1997. North Carolina distanced itself from the Huskies thanks to touchdowns on a blocked punt in the second quarter and an interception return in the third. Sophomore LB Bruce Carter was instrumental in the win, blocking a school- record three punts in the game. With the victory, North Carolina moved to 4-1 on the season, matching its won total from a year ago. In addition, the Tar Heels found themselves in the top-25 for the first time since 2001. North Carolina will stay out of conference this week, when the team welcomes Notre Dame to Chapel Hill. NC STATE: The Wolfpack went toe-to-toe with Boston College this past weekend, but Tom O'Brien wasn't able to pick up a victory over his former team, as NC State fell in the waning moments of the game, 38-31. BC quarterback Chris Crane scored on a 13-yard scramble with just under 23 seconds to play to give the visiting Eagles the victory. One bright spot in the loss was the special teams play of freshman receiver T.J. Graham, who set a school-record with a 100-yard kickoff return for a score. Graham finished the game with 160 yards in kickoff returns, the fourth-highest single-game total in school history. The Wolfpack will have this week off, as they prepare for an October 16th showdown with Florida State in Raleigh. VIRGINIA: The Cavaliers halted a two-game slide with an impressive 31-0 shutout of what was supposed to be a strong Maryland team this past weekend. Quarterback Marc Verica finally erupted for a strong outing, as he completed 25-of-34 passes, for 226 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for a third score. Coming into the game, Virginia had passed for no touchdowns against nine interceptions. Wideout Kevin Ogletree had a big game downfield, pulling down five balls for 100 yards and two TDs. The Virginia rushing attack finally materialized as well, with Cedric Peerman rumbling for 110 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries, while Mikell Simpson added 77 yards on 14 carries. The Cavs will attempt to build on the win this week, as they step out of conference play and welcome East Carolina to Charlottesville. VIRGINIA TECH: The Hokies continued their strong play this past weekend, winning their fifth straight game with a 27-13 decision over Western Kentucky. Tailback Darren Evans was solid again on the ground, rushing for 79 yards and two touchdowns. He extended his scoring streak to six games and has already reached the end zone eight times this season. Placekicker Dustin Keys kept his streak alive as well. With two field goals in as many attempts against the Hilltoppers, Keys has now connected on 11 straight field goal attempts. Tech cornerback Macho Harris recorded his 12th career interception and picked off a pass for the third straight game. The Hokies are idle this week, but will prepare for a road trip to Chestnut Hill on October 18th, against Boston College. WAKE FOREST: The 21st-ranked Demon Deacons were off this past weekend, but will get back to work on Thursday evening, when they welcome the Clemson Tigers to Winston-Salem. Jim Grobe's squad was last in action on September 27th, a stunning 24-17 setback to Navy, as Wake lost for the first time this year.
