The Miami University Steel Band, founded in the spring of 1994, has since become one of the most prolific performing ensembles in Southwestern Ohio. In addition to on-campus performances, the group presents nearly forty off-campus programs each year, ranging from educational school programs to feature concert appearances at large-capacity venues.

Under the leadership of director Chris Tanner, the program has grown to encompass two separate ensembles: Steel Band I is comprised of more experienced players and is primarily a performing ensemble, while Steel Band II functions as a learning experience for those with little or no prior exposure to the idiom. The combined enrollment of these two groups averages fifty students annually, and both ensembles are open to any Miami University student by audition.
