Through an extended urban field experience in Chicago, students will explore the complex ways marginalized people have laid claim to urban space in the context of the changing political economy of a global city. An important objective of this course will be to encourage students to consider the ways intercultural and transnational encounters have shaped the fabric of America's Second City. The course is organized into a series of day-long investigations of particular Chicago neighborhoods that emphasize the local, regional and global forces that have shaped--and continue to shape--them.
