Aging Air Force Planes

The Air Force has the oldest fleet in its history with an average age of 25 years. The “newest” B-52 bombers were built during the Kennedy administration, but still carry the burden as a primary leg of nuclear deterrence and conventional warfare; the bulk of the aerial refueling tankers date from the Eisenhower era; the Air Force’s primary jet trainer, the T-38, is more than 40 years old; the glider-winged U-2 spy plane, still flying, was first built in the 1950s; the A-10 attack ground planes and the B-1B bomber date from the 1970s and many fighters like the F-15 and F-16 are 30 years old.
