URBANA, Ohio -- There is no substitute for a parent’s loving touch. Through touch, babies first learn the comfort and security of loving and of being loved. The staff at the Pediatric Rehab Center at Mercy Memorial Hospital will be offering free infant massage classes beginning on Monday, June 29, and continuing on every last Monday of the month through 2009.Classes will be held between 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the Pediatric Rehab Center, on the second floor of Mercy Memorial Hospital at 904 Scioto Street in Urbana.Numerous studies have found that massage plays a significant role in promoting the proper growth and healthy development of infants. Physically, massage stimulates the nerves, increases blood flow and strengthens the immune system. It can relieve a host of childhood complaints from colic to constipation.Under the direction of Physical Therapist Jonathan Tedena and Licensed Occupational Therapist Susan Rizza, the infant massage classes are designed to benefit infants (birth to 12 months) with muscle tone issues, low birth weight concerns and motor delays. The massage will typically last between 20 – 30 minutes. The classes are being held on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone interested in signing up for the infant massage class should make an appointment by calling (937) 484-6377 or stop by the Pediatric Rehab Center.
