Phillies' Rollins Late Scratch From Lineup

POSTED: 5:19 pm EDT July 24, 2008

(Sports Network) - Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins was a late scratch from Thursday's 3-1 loss against the New York Mets after he was late arriving to Shea Stadium.

"Jimmy was late getting to the yard today," said Phillies manager Charlie Manuel. "I called him in and talked to him. Jimmy and I talked about it, that's all I've got to say. It's kind of an in house thing, between him and I."

Rollins said that he drove to the stadium, leaving about 10 minutes after the team bus, but was delayed. It is the second high-profile benching this season for Rollins, who was pulled from a June 4 game against Cincinnati after he failed to run out a pop-up.

"Just a little too late," Rollins said. "We're not going to agree on this one. I agreed with him on the last one, but we're just not going to agree on this one."

Rollins appeared as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning, but grounded into a game-ending force out against Mets closer Billy Wagner.

Eric Bruntlett started at short and batted leadoff, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in place of Rollins, who entered Thursday batting .270 and riding a 10-game hit streak.

The reigning National League MVP, Rollins was sidelined for nearly a month earlier this season after suffering a sprained left ankle in an April game at Shea Stadium. Since returning from the injury, Rollins had started 64 straight games at short.
