The owner of a well-known restaurant in Wayne County, Ind., told News Center 7 that she is going to do everything she can to stay open.

News broke over the weekend that Welliver’s Smorgasboard in Hagerstown was going to close on June 28 after 62 years in business.

Mary Welliver told News Center 7’s Kathryn Burcham on Monday morning that she is going to work hard to stay open.

According to the Wayne County treasurer, the restaurant owes more than $24,000 in back property taxes.

Welliver said that she has a July 1 payment to the county that has to be made and that she is going to spend the next three weeks raising the money.

Welliver’s is well-known locally, but customers throughout the region traveled to the restaurant that featured more than 150 items.

Welliver said that she does not want her customers to worry about the impending closure. She said that things will remain the same for the time being.

So far, the owners of Welliver’s have not made any official comments about the closing.
