Save Money By Tossing Old Holiday Lights

Posted: 4:53 pm EST November 5, 2009Updated: 5:09 pm EST November 5, 2009

Between Nov. 5 and Nov. 15 people can bring in their old incandescent holiday lights and receive a $3 discount on lights that could save them money on holiday displays.

Marvin Ware knows how expensive it can be to decorate with holiday lights.

“Duirng the holidays my electric bill probably goes up another 20 to 30 dollars,” said Ware.

Decorating with LED can help lower those high holiday electric bills.

“Anytime you see an LED light, it’s much more efficient because it takes less power to run it,” said Jim Higgins, garden supervisor at The Home Depot in Trotwood.

In fact, it takes 80 percent less energy to run LED holiday lights than incandescent strands of lights.

People can string together 87 LED strands without blowing a fuse. Also, because LED lights don’t get as hot, they are safer.

They also last more than 8 times longer than incandescent lights. The LED holiday lights burn for 25,000 hours, while incandescent lights only burn around 3,000 hours.

The Home Depot encourages people to bring in any old incandescent lights they have to receive the discount on LED lights.

“If they work, if they don’t work, I don’t care,” said Higgins. “Bring them in and we’ll get you set up with a brand new box.”

Still, some aren’t ready to give up their old lights.

“We’ll I have such a supply of the ones I like because I bought them when Franks was going out of business,” said Betty Summers, a customer at The Home Depot. “I probably have a lifetime supply.”

Others say tossing their incandescent holiday lights is a no brainer.

“Anybody that’s holding onto those, if they’re going to decorate, they’re just throwing their money away,” said Ware.
