A Bellefontaine man is charged with 80 counts of rape for allegedly abusing two males over the past 20 years.

According to investigators with the Logan County Sheriff's Office, Eric VanVoorhis, who lives at 208 N. Madriver St., was arrested Sunday afternoon at his home.

Officers said the allegations of abuse surfaced last week.

"The incidents began when the boys were under the age of 13, and it has occurred over the past 20 years," said Detective Sgt. Jeff Cooper. "It has affected (the victims) greatly, emotionally and in every aspect of their lives."

"We couldn't believe it. Eighty counts is quite a few counts of rape," said neighbor Steve Geboy. "We have four kids ourselves, and that really shocked us."

Cooper said VanVoorhis is an employee of the Hardin County Board of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, or MRDD, and has also done work with Logan County's MRDD, but the victims are not clients of either agency.

Hardin County MRDD Superintendent Mark Kieffer said VanVoorhis was hired in July as a habilitation specialist, working with adults with developmental disabilities. Kieffer said VanVoorhis did not work with children and was rarely in a position to be unsupervised when working with adult clients.

Those with Logan County's MRDD said VanVoorhis was a contracted worker through Champaign Residential Services in Urbana who provided care services for clients.

Both agencies said VanVoorhis cleared background checks.

Officers said they are investigating if there are any more alleged victims and urge anyone with any information to contact their local authorities.

VanVoorhis is in the Logan County Jail.
