A jury of seven men and five women took less than four hours to deliberate before returning guilty verdicts against a Covington man late Wednesday afternoon to charges of rape and gross sexual imposition.

Convicted as charged is 55-year-old Richard Markland. His victim was 8 years old at the time of the offense according to Covington police.

Miami County Common Pleas Court Judge Jeffrey Welbaum immediately revoked his bond and ordered Markland held in the Miami County jail pending his January 2, 2007, sentencing.

Because his victim was under the age of 10, Markland could face life in prison, plus an additional five years on the charge of gross sexual imposition.
