COLUMBUS, Ohio -- State Auditor Betty Montgomery issued a report Thursday questioning the expenditure of $86,000 by the North Dayton School of Discovery, a charter grade school in Trotwood.Montgomery found more than $18,000 was improperly spent on teacher training. The program included spending on items not allowed by the state, including the purchase of shirts, calculators, binoculars, watches, and stadium cups. Some teachers were also treated to a riverboat cruise several years ago as part of a recognition event in Cincinnati. In a written statement, Montgomery said: ”Charter schools play an important role in our education system. If they are to succeed, however, they must provide the public with a thorough and accurate accounting of taxpayer dollars.”A spokesman for the North Dayton School of Discovery declined comment on Thursday.
