DAYTON- More than two dozen people face a slew of charges after lawmen from every level swooped in on an alleged dog fighting operation in Montgomery County. The main raid took place at a a non-descript warehouse in an industrial part of Dayton Saturday night at 3059 Dryden Road. That's where officers and agents say they interrupted a dog fighting event as it was about to begin."The SWAT team went in, did the flash bomb, (We) secured the place before we went in," said animal control officer Alison Burke. The scene inside resembled that of any legal sporting event."There was a bull horn. (It was) here for the ref to referee the fight. There was actually a concession stand set up in the corner to sell drinks and food," Burke said.Officials simultaneously raided homes in the Dayton area where they say makeshift kennels, training tools, and more fighting dogs were kept.Seized were sixty four American pit bull terriers, found in eight locations.Disturbing videotape was shot of a dog fight held during the year-long investigation by an agent who had infiltrated the ring.Officials said dog fighting is a big money bloodsport-dogs sometimes doing battle for $100,000 in prize money. Officials said dog fighting was just part of a bigger network of money laundering, drugs, and guns.Whatever the criminal enterprise, agents with plenty of experience at investigating dog fighting rings never really get used to the idea."This is a despicable activity. These dogs have scars all over their bodies. One is missing a portion of her lower jaw, torn apart in a fight." said John Goodwin of the U.S. Humane Society. And there will apparently be no happy end for dogs rescued this weekend. Officials say the Montgomery County animal rescue center is already over capacity. So all the dogs seized will be euthanized."That responsibility falls squarely on the shoulders of those who breed them for aggression and killer instinct," said Goodwin.
