A home invasion in Dayton ended with a man shot to death and the suspects on the loose.

Police said three men broke into an apartment on Harold Drive, held the victim and his children at gunpoint and then killed the 52-year-old man as he tried to defend his family.

Officials at the coroner’s office have identified the victim as Dwayn Burg. They said he was killed by a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officers said the shooting happened when several men broke into his apartment.

Burg’s sister, Brandy Hurston, said she cannot believe what happened inside her brother’s apartment. She said one minute she there with her brothers and her father and then the next thing three armed men were breaking in.

Hurston said, “The guys made us all lie down and they kept yelling that they wanted money.” She said her family gave the men all the cash they had, but the men still wanted more.

According to Hurston, one of them pointed a gun at her brother and when her father tried to stop them, he was shot.

Hurston said, “My father said get that gun out of my son’s head and he turned around and shot my friend twice and my father fell down and he shot him again.”

Police arrived and gathered evidence from the scene and searched for the three men, but they were gone before the family could call 911.

Witnesses said the three men were black and that only one of them wore a mask. At this time, no arrests have been made.
