Coroner: Pilot Died Instantly

POSTED: 10:23 am EDT July 30, 2007
UPDATED: 2:35 pm EDT July 30, 2007

Veteran stunt pilot Jim LeRoy was killed instantly when his plane crashed at the 2007 Dayton Air Show, according to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office. LeRoy died of a fractured neck when his plane hit the ground at 200mph. The plane then slid hundreds of yards across the airfield before bursting into flames.

A toxicology report is pending, but according to the coroner's office there is no preliminary indication that drugs or alcohol were in LeRoy's system at the time of the crash.

The National Transportation Safety Board will now investigate the cause of the crash, in an attempt to determine whether there was a mechanical problem for LeRoy's Bulldog Pitts bi-plane, which had been modified for a larger engiine and stronger support surfaces.
