Critics Aiming At Lame Duck Sessions

Legislature May Face Time Limits

Rep. Steve Driehaus and Rep.Todd Book admit they are fighting an uphill battle.

They recently launched a drive to stop the Ohio Legislature from meeting in lame duck session after Election Day.

The two Democrats have been met with skepticism and outright rejection from some legislative leaders.

But they have not given up.

In an interview with WHIOTV.COM, Driehaus said the limit on legislative sessions would prevent last-minute deals that come after the voters have spoken.

Driehaus said the limitation could prevent government waste and sloppy lawmaking.

“If we are going to make decisions and be evaluated on those decisions, those should take place prior to Election Day, not after Election Day,” Driehaus said.

Driehaus said lawmakers could be making much better use of their time to respond to important issues like school funding, energy and job development.
