Police: 10-Year-Old Charged In Fatal House Fire

GREENVILLE, Ohio -- Police in Greenville said a 10-year-old boy has been charged with setting a house fire that killed four children and a woman.Investigators said the child lived in the residence, and has made statements implicating his involvement in the incident.The child was charged with one count of aggravated arson and five counts of murder by the Darke County Prosecutors Office and the Darke County Juvenile Court.Greenville police said investigators were able to determine through their investigation and interviews from witnesses that the fire was intentionally set, but said the fatal outcome was not intentional.

They said the four children who died in the fire were all younger than eight.The mother of three of the children said the smoke was so thick inside the house that she could not see anyone and she and one of her daughters was able to jump from a second-floor window of the two-story duplex.Also on Thursday, people in Greenville showed their their concern at the scene of a fire. People came to the scene and left stuffed animals, toys and other trinkets of love.Across the street from the burned duplex on Montgomery Street mostly children placed stuffed animals and notes of love around a tree.On Wednesday night, a picture of Chanan Palmer and her daughter Kaysha Minnich, 8, was attached to the tree. The two perished in the Sunday morning fire, along with Je’Shawn Davis, 4; Jasmine Davis, 3; and Kayla Winans, 6, who are the children of Christy Winans.She survived the fire.Two roses were placed on the front porch of the charred remains of the duplex. Above the roses, there is a no trespassing sign that warns that no one is permitted to enter the property without prior authorization.The sign was placed at the property by a private investigation firm out of West Milton.With the duplex across the street from a school playground, school officials have placed a canvas along the fence to keep the house out of the view of the children playing during the day.
