Fire Victims Remembered At Greenville Public Library Cornerstone Dedication

Posted: 5:58 pm EDT September 23, 2007Updated: 7:58 pm EDT September 23, 2007

Greenville Mayor Greg Fraley told a crowd of several hundred people Sunday afternoon, at the cornerstone dedication to the addition of the Greenville Public Library, "I am here today with a heavy heart."

He was referring to the fire just a week ago that killed four children and one adult. Fraley indicated that the cornerstone dedication was a much happier event.

With those victims in mind, Mayor Fraley said, "Let the cornerstone be the foundation for future opportunities for boys and girls, until the end of time, to pursue the American dream."

Fraley eluded to the fact that the children who perished in the Montgomery Street fire never had the opportunity to pursue that dream.

Members of the Greenville Masonic Lodge No. 143 conducted the cornerstone dedication ceremony at the library, located next to St. Clair Memorial Hall, near downtown Greenville. In 1901, their lodge conducted a similar ceremony for the cornerstone when the library was first built.

The construction of the new $2.8 million addition to the present library building is well under way.
