Investigation Continues Into Troy HS Drug Incident

Wednesday, February 27, 2008 – updated: 4:14 pm EST February 27, 2008

The investigation continues into how a dangerous mix of prescription pills fell into the hands of some Troy High School students.

Police said they are reviewing information from Tuesday’s incident with the prosecutor and they could file charges by Thursday.

They call it the age of experimentation. Statistics show that children between the seventh and ninth grade have tried alcohol, marijuana or something else.

The statistics also show that abusing substances found in most medicine cabinets is now the preferred way for teenagers to catch a buzz.

The situation that happened at Troy High School is becoming far too familiar for at least six teens who were caught popping prescription medication.

Superintendent Tom Dunn said, "I’m not even sure kids know what they had taken."

A lot of teens in the area have heard of Skittling, and more than likely they have done it.

Teen substance abuse counselor Liesa Inlow, said Skittling is where you, “Take medications and mix them in bags, and place them in a bowl at a party."

Inlow said teens are taking the medications from home. She said, “Stealing a couple at a time won’t be missed. How often do we go to our medicine cabinets and count all of our medications?”

According to Inlow, parents need to take the responsibility to lock up prescriptions and over the counter medicines and know what is going on in their teen’s life.

She said parents have the right to get personal with the children. She said parents should be checking backpacks, know who their friends are and even check and see where they are surfing on the Internet.

Inlow said some children are even ordering medication online to share and sell to friends.
