Couple Arrested In Alleged Elderly Scam

Police arrested two people for scamming an 88-year-old woman out of nearly $10,000.

James Dodds Jr., 53, and 42-year-old Mildred Dewberry, both of Washington Township, were said to have developed an elaborate plan to scam people out of money.

They allegedly targeted elderly people all over Ohio.

The elderly woman, who was targeted in the parking lot of a Wal-Mart in Moraine, said Dewberry approached her by saying her brother was killed in battle in Africa and that she was awarded $50,000.

Dewberry said she was going to give the elderly woman that money, if the woman would donate $40,000 to charity and keep $10,000 for herself.

Dodds also allegedly approached the elderly woman by telling her he worked at a local bank and vouched for Dewberry.

Police said the two scam artists said the only way they could trust the woman with the money was if she withdrew $10,000 of her own to give to the couple.

They made an exchange. Dewberry and Dodds allegedly made off with the woman’s cash. The elderly lady did not receive the $50,000.

Police served a search warrant at a house in Washington Township to recover evidence from this scam. They arrested the two people shortly thereafter.

Dewberry and Dodds have been arraigned and are now being held in the Montgomery County Jail.
