A Vandalia mother is frustrated that a Marine has not been found who may be responsible for her daughter’s death.

Mary Lauterbach has been waiting for justice after her pregnant daughter Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach was found dead in North Carolina.

Authorities said the man accused of killing the pregnant Marine, Lance Cpl. Cesar Laurean, is believed to be hiding in Mexico.

Mary Lauterbach said, “My concern is I want women to be protected.”

She is a parent left in limbo and a mom in misery as she visits her daughter’s gravesite looking for answers.

Mary Lauterbach said her daughter, Maria, looked forward to joining the Marines even while she played soccer at Vandalia High School. However, the dream quickly became a nightmare almost a year after Maria Lauterbach claimed she was assaulted and raped by Laurean.

Mary Lauterbach told her daughter not to ignore the attack. She said, “I said you have to report this because you have to protect all the Marine women, make sure it does not happen to anyone else.”

No hearings were held for six months as the investigation dragged on from May to December of last year and Lauterbach disappeared in December.

When Lauterbach's body was discovered, investigators focused on Laurean who is now believed to be hiding in Mexico, and according to the FBI he may have darker skin and a beard.

Rep. Mike Turner has been trying to press Marine investigators for answers for the family and to protect other Marine women who report similar incidents.

One of the questions that Turner wants investigators at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina to answer is why Laurean did not have to submit any DNA during the investigation.

Meanwhile, Mary Lauterbach believes her daughter would be proud of her speaking out on her behalf and for the protection of anyone else’s daughter.
