Jury Returns Verdict In Child Abuse Trial

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- A jury in Springfield has convicted a man accused of beating his adopted children with sticks and a hammer and throwing one off of a roof.James Ferguson showed little emotion as the verdicts were read.The jury found him guilty on 17 counts of endangering children, five counts of permitting child abuse and three counts of felonious assault. The jury also found him not guilty on five other charges of endangering children and felonious assault.Following the verdict, Ferguson’s bond was terminated and he was taken into custody.Ferguson’s five adopted children testified that he repeatedly beat them with belts, sticks and hammers from 2000 to 2004 while the family lived in Springfield and Marysville.Ferguson’s attorney said they will file an appeal. His client will be sentenced on May 9.Vonda Ferguson is expected to go on trial on May 5.
