GOP Calls For Ohio Attorney General To Resign Amid Scandal

Ohio Republicans are calling for Attorney General Marc Dann to resign, calling his public apology for a scandal in his office an inadequate response.

Dann admitted Friday to an affair with an employee. He made the admission during a news conference after an internal investigation found that top aide Anthony Gutierrez violated the office's sexual harassment policy.

“I have not conducted myself in a way that is consistent with my values as a husband, a father and my responsibilities as Attorney General of Ohio. At a difficult time in my marriage I got involved in a romantic relationship with a member of my staff. That was intrinsically wrong," Dann said.

Dann said he was disappointed in his own behavior, but added that he would not resign.

For their behavior, Gutierrez and two other people in the office have been forced out of their jobs. Two women in the office had accused Gutierrez of making unwanted sexual advances.

An internal investigation found Gutierrez not only sexually harassed the women and created a hostile work environment, but that he also damaged a state car several times after drinking alcohol and was carrying a concealed weapon on state property.

The investigation also found that Marc Dann showed poor judgement in inviting one of the women over for pizza and drinks to an apartment that he shared with Gutierrez.

Ohio GOP Deputy Chairman Kevin DeWine, who is also a state representative from Beavercreek, said Dann failed Ohioans by allowing an immoral and unethical atmosphere to thrive under his watch. DeWine said Dann turned the Attorney General's Office into a "raunchey frat pad."

Dann, who campaigned to clean up ethical blunders by the state's Republicans, said he takes responsibility for the scandal but repeatedly said Friday that he will remain in office.

He said ultimately Ohio voters will have the final say on his future in office when they go to the polls in 2010.

Although the internal investigation into the sexual harassment case was completed, the scandal is far from over.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating abuse of the state vehicle and other remaining issues from the case.

The two women who filed the original complaint have been offered the opportunity to continue in their original jobs.

Dann told reporters that he plans to turn the office around and improve operations. He also added that he hopes his wife forgives him.
