Midnight Walk Leaves Man Injured After Being Shot

Tuesday, May 13, 2008 – updated: 9:46 am EDT May 13, 2008

Police said a man and a woman out for a midnight walk ran into huge trouble when another man walked up to them and, without warning, yelled at them and opened fire with a gun.

The shooting happened in the 1900 block of West Grand Avenue in Dayton just before midnight Monday night. Officers said the victim is a 31-year-old man who was hit three times by bullets, once in each leg and also once in the lower back. Police said he is listed in critical condition at a local hospital.

Officers said they received a 911 call from the victim’s fiancé, and when they arrived at the scene with medics the man was found shot and bleeding in the street. Medics worked to stabilize his condition right there in the street before taking him to the hospital.

Dayton Police Lt. Robert Mannix said investigators asked the woman about the gunman and what happened to the couple and she told them that "they were just minding their own business, she didn't know who he was or whatever, she didn't know what he wanted and he just started shooting, yes."

Police say the couple told officers the gunman was dressed all in black clothing.

Officers put up the crime scene tape along West Grand Avenue to preserve any possible clues that evidence technicians might be able to recover. They also called in the department's homicide squad to take over the investigation. Supervisors said officers went door-to-door in the neighborhood but could not track down anyone else that witnessed the shooting.

Evidence crews located several spent shell casings, but police sid they are nowhere close to having answers as to what motivated the gunfire.
