Building, Lawnmowers Damaged By Fire

UPDATED: 7:04 pm EDT May 13, 2008

An early morning explosion damaged one building of a lawnmower and landscaping business in Englewood.

The explosion happened at about 7:45 Tuesday morning at Area Wide Services on North Main Street. Firefighters said a fellow crew member called the fire in as he was passing by.

Chief Bud Bergman said on arrival crew members found a 300-gallon waste oil tank had ignited and exploded. “It appears now that the workers here were sharpening some mower blades and a spark found its way into the fuel tank,” Bergman said.

He said people several blocks away heard the explosion.

Doug Wilson, manager of Area Wide Services, was in the building when the fire happened. “We came in this morning and we was opening up and there was a big explosion,” he said. Wilson said three people were inside the building at the time.

No one was injured. A number of lawnmowers were damaged in the flames and one building sustained fire and smoke damage. Firefighters estimated the damage at about $100,000.
