Gov. Strickland May Look Locally For New Ohio Attorney General

Thursday, May 15, 2008 – updated: 9:58 pm EDT May 15, 2008

Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland said he will act quickly to replace Marc Dann, who resigned as attorney general.

Dann stepped down from his position after he admitted having an affair with a co-worker.

A top manager on his staff was also accused of sexual harassment by two of his female employees.

Strickland, a fellow Democrat, said serious screenings had not yet begun while Dann was still refusing to leave office.

In a press conference, Strickland noted the qualities for which he is looking for are, “maturity, experience, and management ability.” He continued, “We need someone who can provide confidence to many, many employees of the attorney general’s office.”

Some believe that Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck could be chosen as a possible successor, as he is one of the senior prosecutors in the state.

“It’s not a job I have lobbied for or actively pursued,” Heck told News Center 7. “But, certainly if the governor calls to talk about the job, it’s something I would seriously consider and talk about.”

Another potential successor locally is former Ohio Sen. Mike DeWine of Cedarville. News Center 7 contacted him, and his response was “no comment.”

Under law, First Assistant Attorney General Tom Winters will assume the responsibilities of attorney general until Strickland names a replacement.
