Memorial Weekend Cookouts Will Be More Costly

POSTED: 11:45 am EDT May 22, 2008
UPDATED: 4:53 pm EDT May 22, 2008

Gasoline won't be the only expensive item this Memorial Weekend. The cost for a cookout is higher too.

And it probably isn't a suprise, that the rising cost of food is directly tied to the rising cost of gas. Some cookout favorites are up more than 15 percent in just one year's time.

Meat, especially beef, is costing more along with fresh produce like the lettuce and tomatoes you want to put on that burger.

Experts say the highest increases are in break-based products like sandwich buns and chips, which are up 12 percent nationwide.

The reason: It is costing more to transport food thanks to the high price of gas.

Also, the increased production of ethanol is decreasing corn supplies for food manufacturers. That means all sorts of grain based products are up, along with the price of meat.
