Moraine Worries About Future As GM Moves To Close Plant

MORAINE, Ohio -- Residents of Moraine fear it will become a ghost town when the plant where General Motors Corp. assembles sports utility vehicles is shut down.GM Chief Executive Rick Wagoner announced the closures of four truck and SUV plants Tuesday in response to slumping sales brought on by surging gasoline prices.Debbie Miller, 52, said there are no jobs in Moraine, and many people will be forced to leave. Miller said she may have to close her restaurant next to the plant.Dayton Mayor Rhine McLin said the shutdown is likely to strain community services such as food pantries.Plants also are closing in Oshawa, Ontario; Janesville, Wis.; and Toluca, Mexico.One union leader said he will continue to fight to produce a product at the facility.
