Springfield police said they set up the Safe Streets Task Force to fight crime in a different way.

So far, they said the program has been a success with guns and drugs off the streets and nearly 200 people arrested.

The task force uses plain-clothes officers who investigate all types of offenses from very minor to very serious.

In the two months since the program has been up and running, 9,435 dollars have been seized, four guns and various amounts of drugs like heroin and crack cocaine. Officers have made over 190 arrests.

Springfield police put the Safe Streets program in place back in May. Four patrol officers volunteered for the duty and teamed up with the narcotics unit to form the new task force.

Chief Steve Moody said, " We're really trying to address what the members of this community want us to address. They want to be safe in their neighborhoods, they want to live peacefully."

Chief Moody said the overtime hours used for the task force total about 41 hours for those two months.
