HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Ohio -- A local business opened its doors as usual early Tuesday morning despite damage to the roof and the side of the building from an overnight fire.Firefighters say someone targeted Labor Works of Dayton, located in the 3600 block of Salem Avenue, early Tuesday morning.Harrison Township Firefighters say they got a report of smoke coming from a building and smoke in the building as well. Battalion Chief Darrin Wiseman said that " a worker called it in and thought it was in the air conditioning unit. Upon our arrival we came here to the back to do some investigating and one of the crews found some stuff stuck up in the building and set off."Firefighters opened a side door and spotted smoke and flames. Then they began tearing down ceiling panels and gutters on the side of the building, even cutting a hole in the roof in order to keep the flames from spreading. They were successful and within fifteen minutes had the fire under control.Firefighters said they believe an arsonist tried to torch the building by taking a 2-foot square section of cardboard, lighting it on fire and jamming it into the side of the building near the roof.Investigators said that if the employees had not been inside and smelled the smoke, the fire could have burned a long time without being discovered.Labor Works helps people find temporary and contract work with local employers. Investigators are expected to talk with managers about any clients or customers that may have been unhappy or felt they had been wronged.Firefighters said that right now there is no description of anyone that might have set the fire, and no one saw anyone around the building.
