Gas Station Shut Down After Chemical Spill

Friday, July 11, 2008 – updated: 3:01 pm EDT July 11, 2008

Motorists getting gas in Washington Township got a surprise after a chemical spill shut down the gas station for an hour.

The incident happened around 9:30 a.m. Friday at the BP station on the intersection of Route 725 and Yankee Street.

Officials said the driver of a Tru-Green fertilizer truck was headed back from a job and pulled in at the gas station, but authorities said the driver had forgotten to flip a simple switch.

Authorities said the pump actually was engaged on the truck as he was driving down the road and that caused over pressurization on the delivery hose.

The hose blew out and sent 100 gallons of herbicide down a storm sewer.

The chemical is the same thing that people spray on yards to kill weeds and is not harmful to humans.

However, officials said it does present a problem for aquatic life and also vegetation along a creek or a stream.

Hazmat crews were called in and managed to contain the spill.
