DPS Classes Resume With No High School Busing

Monday, August 11, 2008 – updated: 5:45 pm EDT August 11, 2008

It was the first day of school for students in the Dayton Public Schools, but there were no buses for high school students.

The district is not providing bus service this year to high school students because of financial cutbacks. School officials are hoping that the cutbacks do not affect the number of students who will attend school.

High School students will not be riding the yellow district school buses or taking any other bus to class at the school district's expense. In the past, Dayton Schools arranged for RTA buses to take high school students to school. However, a failed levy and budget cutbacks took away the money for that program.

Parents and students are now responsible for coming up with their own money for an RTA bus pass, or another way to get to school.

Some parents said it could put a big strain on them, and in some cases, it may not happen. Linda Henn said, “People with low income may not have a way to get kids to school and that will be more frustrating on the school district.”

Superintendent Kurt Stanic said, “I think it is important to note that this decision to halt bus transportation for high school students was made a year ago. So hopefully, parents have made provisions to get their students to school safetly.”

Stanic said the district made 4,000 phone calls to make sure parents of high school students knew that their high school students needed transportation to school.
