Hydrogen Leak Forces Evacuations In Miamisburg

Tuesday, August 26, 2008 – updated: 9:54 am EDT August 26, 2008

Hazmat crews forced people at a ball diamond and neighboring houses in Miamisburg to evacuate the area when hydrogen started leaking at a local plant.

The leak happened at the Dayton Power and Light plant on Chautauqua Road, which is located along the Great Miami River.

Fire officials said workers were loading a hydrogen tank when a coupling broke. Hazmat crews were called and told people to evacuate the area.

No one was injured during the leak. Fire crews said the hydrogen should dissipate on its own.

The plant serves as a back up for electricity production.
