Friday, August 29, 2008 – updated: 2:20 pm EDT August 29, 2008

A 19-year-old woman died after the pickup she was riding in hit a utility pole and then flipped upside down. Moraine Police identified the victim as Stephanie Price of Carlisle.

Moraine police said the crash happened about 12:30 a.m. on Springboro Pike(also known as Route 741) near Cobblegate Drive.

Officers said it looks the 27-year-old driver, identified as John Byrge of Moraine, drove the pickup North on Springboro Road and lost control, hitting the curb on the right side of the road.

The pickup then veered across 5 lanes and jumped the curb on the wrong side of the road, hitting a utility pole. Investigators said the truck flipped upside down.

Officers said that Byrge and Price, believed to be boyfriend and girlfriend, did not have their seat belts buckled. Rescue crews had to jack up the pickup and then brace it with large wooden braces in order to get to the victims.

They rushed Byrge to Careflight for a trip to the hospital. Price was pronounced dead at the scene.

Moraine police said if the couple had been wearing their seat belts, there might have been a much different outcome.

Sgt. Chris Selby said, "In this accident seat belts were a factor. If both were wearing belts, these probably would have been minor injuries. If the female that expired were wearing a belt, she probably would not have died."

Moraine Police called in their special Accident Investigation Team to figure out why Byrge lost control of the pickup in the first place. They believe speed may have played a role in the crash.
