MORAINE, Ohio -- The trickle-down effect is being felt by local suppliers, only days after G.M. announced its closing the Moraine Assembly plant December 23.Christina Hinton, an employee of Jamestown Industries said, "We're not having jobs when they close the doors. We're done."Hinton and her co-workers found out Monday that their company is closing down the same day as the Moraine plant. Kay Valentine, another Jamestown Industries employee said, "We're depressed, angry."For every worker at Jamestown Industries that will lose their jobs, there are stores, restaurants and other businesses that will also suffer.Workers at the Moraine plant were given a letter Friday saying the plant is closing earlier than expected. The last day of production will be December 23.
SOUND OFF: Are You Shocked? The Moraine plant currently employs 1,100 workers. On Monday, News Center 7 spoke with Moraine’s City Manager who said the city is still working to try and get GM to continue to use the facility.David Hicks said the city is hopeful because the plant faced similar issues in the '70s and '80s, but managed to keep the factory operational with new products. The GM local union is working on a severance package for those members who will be without a job.IUE-CWA President Jim Clark said, "IUE-CWA is deeply disappointed in General Motor's refusal to keep the Moraine Assembly plant open. The announcement that the plant will be closed much earlier than initially stated will further hurt our members, their families and a Dayton community already rocked by plant closings and layoffs."Stay tuned to whiotv.com and News Center 7 for further updates on this story.
