Suspect Pleads Not Guilty In Double Shooting

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio -- A Springfield man pleaded not guilty Monday to fatally shooting two women over the weekend. One of the victims was the mother of his children.Charles Cunningham, 37, faced the victims’ families as he was arraigned in a Clark County courtroom.Cunningham pleaded not guilty to two counts of aggravated murder.Officers were called to the 500 block of North Street just before 3:00 a.m. Saturday where they found two women shot. Their SUV was parked at a curb, the lights still on.Springfield Police Chief Steve Moody said, "This was very brutal."Police said Heidi Shook, 28, died at the scene. Jessica Serna, 27, was taken by careflight to Miami Valley Hospital, where she died early Sunday morning.Officers found the victims after responding to an open cell phone line after one of the victim's called 911.Ron Serna said, “I did not like him.” Serna said he pleaded with his daughter to leave Cunningham. "We all told her that she needed to get away from him," Serna said.Shook and Serna were long-time friends who were out celebrating Shook's birthday. Police said the women had been trying to avoid Cunningham the entire evening.Cunningham is being held on a $1 million bond. If convicted, he could get the death penalty.He was already charged with domestic violence in connection with an incident involving Jessica Serna over Labor Day Weekend.
