DAYTON, Ohio -- With a struggling economy many are wondering if college loans are still available for those who need financial aid.News Center 7 is looking into how one can obtain a loan, especially when it comes to paying for college tuition. At the University Of Dayton, or on any other college campus, students have been watching the economy roller coaster with nervous anticipation.Freshman Emily Sheehan who is from Pittsburgh said access to student loans is important. She said when she graduates she will have quite a bit of debt.Sheehan said, “Over $100,000. That’s a lot of money, and as an 18-year-old, it’s money that I don’t have or will ever have again.”So will students still have access to loans even when the economy struggles?Kathy Harmon is the Director of Financial Aid at UD said there will be money available. She said, “With these times being difficult for families, it is important to reassure them that financing is available for their children to go to college. Federal Stafford Loans are available just like they have always been. The Plus Loan is available just like it has always been. Colleges and universities still have scholarships and need-based grants to offer.”The head of Wright-Patt Credit Union said whether it is for college or any other purpose, money is available if you qualify based on income and credit history.Dough Fecher said, “Typically if you’ve got your budget in order, you don’t have a lot of money out on credit cards, loans are available for you. It is not as tough for you at a credit union as it might be at other places.”In fact, Wright-Patt Credit Union is working to pickup where other loan opportunities leave off for families with college students.Harmon said she tells students to keep their grades up and get good test scores. It will really increase your chance of getting grants and scholarships.
