Strickland Talks About DHL Job Losses

WILMINGTON, Ohio -- Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland was in Wilmington on Tuesday for a Veterans Day service and to talk about the latest on DHL’s plans.Strickland held an economic meeting with local officials after Monday’s announcement by DHL Express that it will end its U.S. domestic deliveries by Jan. 30.Wilmington is the site of a DHL air shipping hub.Tony Olson is a field organizer for the American Postal Workers Union in Wilmington. He said out of about 10,000 people currently working at the DHL operation, only 500 to 700 will have jobs after January.
LISTEN TO: DHL AnnouncementStrickland said, “It is a happy time and a sad time here.” He said it is sad that some many jobs could potentially be lost because of the cuts. However, he said it is a happy time because the community is strong and has great pride.The governor was joined by the Mayor of Wilmington and a Clinton County Commissioner.Strickland said the state will likely have to seek federal loans to pay unemployment compensation because of DHL and other mass layoffs around the state.
