Wilberforce University Making Budget Cuts

Posted: 9:14 pm EST November 14, 2008Updated: 9:27 pm EST November 14, 2008

These tough economic times are forcing a local university to make changes.

Wilberforce University announced a $2.8 million shortfall, and some of the changes went into effect Friday.

Wilberforce is seeing an increase in alumni giving and board support, but primary revenue sources such as private giving dwindled.

Some of the changes being made are the non-personal budget being reduced to 30 percent, employees contributing to their insurance fund, the implementation of three employee furloughs, the reduction of salaries, and the elimination of non-faculty positions.

The interim president is concerned but hopes the changes being made will get the university back on financial track.

More changes will go into effect Dec. 1.
