The 56-year-old Hoffman was found dead late Thursday night inside the police headquarters on West Canal Street after he failed to answer his radio.

Darke County Deputy Detective Sgt. Mark Whittaker confirmed Friday morning that the sheriff's department and the Darke County Coroner's Office are investigating Hoffman's death. Whittaker said, "Evidence found at the scene indicates that the chief died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Funeral services will be Wednesday morning at 10:30 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Frenchtown. Burial with police honors will follow in the Holy Family Church Cemetery.

Calling hours will be Tuesday from 3-8 p.m. at the Oliver-Floyd Funeral Home at 1000 N. Broadway in Greenville.
