Officers with Montgomery County's OVI Taskforce conducted a road checkpoint Saturday evening to take impaired drivers off the street.

The OVI checkpoint happened near the intersection of Lyons Drive and Yankee Street in Washington Township.

Officers with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Ohio Highway Patrol, Miami Township Police Department and Centerville Police Department combined their efforts to check driver sobriety.

"If we save one life, then that would make it all worth it," said Lt. Michael Hild Jr., with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office. "There is a higher rate of impaired drivers on the roads during the holiday season, statistically. That's why we're out here on the holidays."

Officers said the Thanksgiving holiday usually brings more drunk drivers to the street than any other holiday. The upcoming winter snow and ice also make drunk drivers an even bigger danger.

"Certainly the an impaired driver, (their) reaction times are slower, and you don't make the decisions you'd make if you are not impaired," Hild said. "So, obviously weather is a factor, they're not going to react as quickly."

Authorities took several drivers in custody, including an alleged intoxicated man who drove his truck on the curb and flattened two tires. Investigators also took a man into custody who they believe was under the influence of drugs.

The suspected impaired drivers were taken to the Montgomery County Jail.

"If they (drive impaired) we want to give them a place to stay, and that's the jail," Hild said.

Sunday, deputies reported 5 OVI arrests, 1 misdemeanor arrest, 1 felony arrest, 1 adult restraint citation, 1 driving under suspension citation, and 5 other traffic citations.
