Elderly Woman Attacked; Man Charged 13 Years Later

Monday, December 1, 2008 – updated: 6:55 pm EST December 1, 2008

Evonne Ammar was 72 years old when Dayton police said a man broke into her home, assaulted and robbed her. Now, 13 years later, police said they have identified a suspect in her case through a match in DNA.

Christopher Flagg, 39, was recently sentenced to six years in prison in connection with an unrelated crime in Butler County. Authorities said it was that case that helped lead them to the DNA match.

Police now believe Flagg is the person responsible for invading Ammar's home in 1995.

Ammar, who turns 86 on Tuesday, said she had to spend several days in the hospital after the man hit her in the head with a glass basket from her home. She said her neighbors tried to help after hearing her scream.

"By the time they came downstairs, he was gone, but there I was, a bloody mess," she said.

Ammar said she didn't even know that police were still investigating her case.

"I didn't realize that they kept the case open," Ammar said. "It made me feel good, and I thought 'Well, justice at last.'"

Police said they gathered additional information to help back up the DNA evidence. A grand jury charged him with aggravated robbery, felonious assault and aggravated burglary. Flagg is currently incarcerated in the Lebanon Correctional Institution on charges of attempted aggravated robbery and felonious assault.

Authorities are expected to transport Flagg to the Montgomery County Courthouse for an arraignment Tuesday.
