20 Cemex Employees Laid Off

A local company in Fairborn said it has temporarily laid off 20 employees.

About two weeks ago, Cemex had a little more than 100 employees working for the company. However, on Dec. 18, 20 employees were laid off.

Cemex is a company that makes concrete.

News Center 7 talked with a spokesperson from Cemex by telephone to find out the reason for the layoffs.

Jennifer Borgen said, “There’s a low demand right now for cement. We’ve produced as much as we can. Silos are full. We’ve stopped production. We’ve suspended it until the economy bounces back.”

Borgen said Cemex worked with the union to figure out which workers to temporarily law off. The 20 employees were responsible for quality control, lab and quarry work.

However, Cemex said the goal is to get them back on the job quickly.

Borgen said, “We don’t believe these are permanent. We don’t anticipate this will be long at all.”

Cemex said it is hoping that the jobs will be reinstated in early spring when building begins and concrete is needed.

In the meantime, Borgen said, all the laid off workers still have what is considered active status, so when they are needed back, they will not be passed over by someone new.
