A man accused of taking his son and setting off a regional Amber Alert appeared in court on Monday.

Christopher Lucas appeared in a Champaign County courtroom and was charged with one count of child endangering. He was also given a court-appointed attorney.

Lucas is accused of taking his 2-year-old son, Jacob, from his Christiansburg home on Friday night.

The Amber Alert was issued on Saturday after authorities became concerned about Lucas’ mental state. His wife told police that he was not taking his medication for a mental illness.

Police in Springfield said a citizen who saw the Amber Alert notified authorities after seeing Lucas’ minivan on Limestone Street just before 9 p.m. Saturday.

Officers responded and took him into custody. The child was found asleep in the back seat, reportedly in a car seat.

Lucas’ bond was set at $2,000. A condition of his bond is that he needs to stay away from the child.
