Man Crashed Stolen SUV And Left The Scene

Posted: 4:06 pm EDT March 12, 2009

Authorities in Greene County are looking for a man who crashed a stolen Escalade in Spring Valley Township and left the scene of the accident.

Officers say he was behind the wheel of a stolen S-U-V when he traveled at a high rate of speed through Clearcreek Township and Bellbrook, and crashed in Spring Valley Township.

Officer Larry Wheeler of the Bellbrook Police Department said, "Onstar called and said an escalade crashed outside of Spring Valley."

Officer Wheeler said he was familiar with that Escalade. He had seen it earlier in Bellbrook. Wheeler said, "He was going past me with radar reading 69 miles per hour."

Officer Wheeler said he tried to stop the driver of the SUV but he just kept going, so he stopped his pursuit. But the driver didn't get much farther before cdrashing into some utility poles in Spring Valley Township. He knocked down power lines and left the crash scene.

Aaron Denlinger was on his way home from work when his Bronco hit the downed wires. Denlinger said, "It looks like someone used a can opener on the top of my car." He crawled out of the wreckage, thankful that the wires were not live. "I just didn't know what to expect. I really didn't think about it until afterwards. Thank God, I was alright," said Denlinger.

Clearcreek Township police now confirm that they too were involved in a brief pursuit of the Escalade and officers determined that the vehicle was stolen. That may explain some of the items that Bellbrook police found in the trunk. Officer Wheeler said he found, "Snow blowers, saws, tool boxes. It appears they were not transporting their own personal property."

That property is now in the hands of the police, but the man behind the wheel of the crashed Escalade is still missing.
