Mercer County Sheriff Jeff Grey reported that his office is investigating that county's second traffic fatality of 2009.

Central Dispatch received a call of a vehicle on fire in the area of Cooper Farms on the north end of Fort Recovery around 1:48 a.m. Saturday

According to deputies, it appears the vehicle was traveling south on State Route 49 just north of the Fort Recovery village limits. For some unknown reason, the vehicle traveled off the west side of highway and into the barnyard located at 2369 S.R. 49.

The vehicle struck a vinyl fence and then traveled into a metal fence row. Deputies said the vehicle went airborne and slammed into a large grain silo, which is located at Cooper Farms. The vehicle came to rest on its side, catching on fire.

The crash was initially reported by a passerby who did not witness the crash.

The only occupant in the vehicle was pronounced dead on scene by Acting Mercer County Coroner Dr. John Naveau.

The Sheriff’s Office is not releasing any other information regarding the crash until the occupant can be positively identified. Dr. Naveau has ordered an autopsy.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Southwest Mercer Fire Department, Fort Recovery Police Department, and St. Henry Squad Three.

The crash remains under investigation.
