Grain Bin Hot Spot Under Control

SOUTH CHARLESTON, Ohio -- Some resident of South Charleston were back in their homes Monday night after being evacuated on Monday after a fire erupted in a grain bin at Southwest Landmark.The grain elevator is located on N. Chillicothe Street.Firefighters were still putting out hot spots Monday night and they said that was not uncommon in a grain elevator fire.Earlier in the day, emergency personnel evacuated a bank, post office, hardware store and several other businesses because of the potential for an explosion.According to a Melanie Wilt, a spokesperson with Southwest Landmark, firefighters were called on Monday morning to help isolate and help put out the fire.People who live nearby the company, said corn had been smoldering for days. Lorie Delaney said, "It's been going on about a week now."The company said it had been working for days to remove grain from one bin once the hot spot was detected.Authorities said residents who were evacuated earlier in the day were allowed back in their homes by nightfall.
